Montecristo Reserva Negra Robusto

Quick, when I say "Mexico" what do you think of? I can pretty much guarantee no one thought of cigars. Well Montecristo decided to wrap it's latest cigar in a maduro wrapper from Mexico. Sounds good to me and it looks great. Plus I really enjoy the gold and black label Montecristo has brought back as it gives it sort of a distinguished look. So what give's with the Mexican wrapper?

Situated on the east coast of Southern Mexico lies the coastal state of Veracruz and the San Andres valley. This is pretty good soil thanks to thousands of years of volcanic activity and it shows well in this cigar. You may remember the review from yesterday which was also a maduro wrapped cigar but different soil gives the tobacco a completely different taste profile. Check my notes after the break!

Tasting Notes:
This is a "box pressed" cigar so it has a cube feel in your hands but the same hairy wrapper that is typical of a maduro leaf. It's a well rolled cigar with some heft to it for it's diminutive size. There is still that typical sweetness when you first light it but instead of chocolate it's more of a caramel taste that prevails on the palette. The other touches I noticed where a light roasted coffee hint. Your left with a light pepper or spice that builds as you move further down the stick. By the finish you are getting a full blast of nicotine and pepper so it wasn't a great way to leave in my opinion.

This was an interesting cigar and I suppose the marketing and branding is what really grabbed me but the price wasn't terrible so I figured I would give it a shot. It's definitely a full-bodied smoke and not one I would recommend to any beginner or even intermediate smoker unless they really like the pepper and don't mind getting a big blast. I think next time I'll stick with what I know and not be fooled by the ad guru's...
